Bear and cubs between Haines and chilkat lake, Alaska

It was a surprise! We were driving a small road along a salmon river north of Haines. We saw cars and stopped. We watched and photographed the bears pulling roots, moving along the wide shore, for nearly an hour! (I think the salmon spawning run in that river is over for the season.)

Max identified them correctly: grizzlies! Dangerous bears. I was scared twice: first when the mother moved in our direction, but we couldn’t see exactly where, due to brush. Second was the next day when we looked at the photos milt took with his long lens, and saw the size and sharpness of the claws!

Talking with people since, seems like it was somewhat unusual to see.
